Aerospace technology for the road
Steer-by-wire refers to a system in which no mechanical connection exists between steering wheel and the wheels. Instead of this a control command from a sensor (on the steering wheel or another control input) is forwarded via a control device to an electromechanical actuator, which carries out the control command to the wheels. The steering is carried out via a force-feedback system – the force-feedback is necessary so that the driver feels what is happening on the road. Fly-by-wire has already been put into practice in air traffic.
The advantages of a steer-by-wire system: there is a lot of design and engineering freedom, the steering rod cannot break into the interior of the vehicle in the case of a head-on collision, it enables autonomous driving, as the wheels can be steered independently of the steering wheel position, right-hand and left-hand drive vehicles are easy to implement.
We have already equipped several steer-by-wire vehicles with the most different components: such as with steering wheel actuators, joysticks and motor controllers, among others. Together with the Technical University of Kaiserlautern we are continuing our research in the steer-by-wire field: our research project OptiSteer concerns itself with the development and optimization of control strategies and hardware systems in order to attain the best possible steering performance in future generations of vehicles.
Our customers appreciate our total comprehension of mechatronics, the ability to integrate safety specifications into the development process, our solutions for cramped space conditions and the sensitivity and outstanding performance of our systems.
